Colorado Triumphs in Overtime Thriller Against Baylor

BOULDER, Colo. – Under the leadership of head coach Deion Sanders, the Colorado Buffaloes have started the season strong for the second consecutive year, improving to 3-1 after a thrilling 38-31 overtime victory at home against Baylor. Once again, key players Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders delivered clutch performances, propelling the team to a dramatic win.

The Buffaloes forced overtime with an astonishing 43-yard touchdown pass as time expired, tying the game at 31-31. On the final play of regulation, quarterback Shedeur Sanders rolled to his left and launched a precise pass to the corner of the end zone. In the pouring rain, receiver LaJohntay Wester made a brilliant catch, extending his arms and cradling the ball perfectly to secure the score.

This moment of magic came just after a near-miss when Colorado's Will Sheppard dropped a potential touchdown pass near the end zone. Despite the setback, the Buffaloes bounced back to claim a hard-fought victory.

In the first overtime series, Shedeur Sanders—head coach Deion Sanders' youngest son—methodically led the Buffaloes down the field, covering 25 yards in seven plays. The drive culminated with freshman running back Micah Welch plunging into the end zone from one yard out to give Colorado the lead.

Baylor had a chance to answer, but on their final play, running back Dominic Richardson fumbled as he attempted a leaping dive at the goal line. Colorado’s dynamic two-way player, Travis Hunter, stepped up in a critical moment, stopping Richardson and forcing the fumble to seal the victory for the Buffs.

The crowd at Folsom Field erupted in celebration, storming the field after Colorado's thrilling homecoming victory. Fans filled the stadium, creating an electric atmosphere for the sold-out game. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders put on a show, completing 25 of 41 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns. Travis Hunter also had a standout performance, hauling in seven receptions for 130 yards, solidifying his impact on the game.

Explosive Moments Define the First Half

The atmosphere at Folsom Field shifted dramatically as the Buffs trailed 24-10 late in the second quarter, silencing the crowd of 52,794. Baylor's surge came from two huge plays in quick succession. Jamaal Bell ignited the momentum with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown along the right sideline, followed shortly by a 45-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Sawyer Robertson, further extending the Bears' lead.

Buffs Respond with a Timely Touchdown

Baylor’s second big score came on a crucial fourth-and-1, as quarterback Sawyer Robertson kept the ball and sprinted downfield for a touchdown. However, Colorado quickly answered back with a game-changing play of their own.

With just 50 seconds left in the half, Shedeur Sanders avoided a near sack and launched a pass to the right side, connecting with receiver Omarion Miller. Miller was nearly brought down at the Baylor 35-yard line, but he kept his balance and charged ahead for a stunning 58-yard touchdown. Though replays hinted that Miller’s left shin may have grazed the ground, the officials upheld the touchdown call, giving the Buffaloes renewed momentum heading into halftime.

Travis Hunter Sparks Colorado’s Comeback

Colorado leveled the score at 24-24 with just one minute remaining in the third quarter, completing an impressive 80-yard touchdown drive. Key to this surge was Travis Hunter, who made two crucial receptions: a 46-yard catch followed by a 31-yard grab on third-and-15, which advanced the Buffs to the Baylor 8-yard line. Just two plays later, Micah Welch powered through for a 2-yard touchdown run.

By the end of the third quarter, Hunter had accumulated five catches for 122 yards, marking his fifth consecutive game with over 100 receiving yards, a streak that dates back to last season. Last week, he set a school record for achieving this feat in four straight games.

Baylor Regains the Lead

With 5:43 remaining in the fourth quarter, Baylor surged ahead 31-24, thanks to a stunning 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sawyer Robertson to receiver Hal Presley. Under tight coverage from cornerback DJ McKinney, Presley made a spectacular one-handed catch in the left corner of the end zone, capping off an eight-play, 61-yard drive.

On Colorado's subsequent possession, the Baylor defense stepped up, sacking Shedeur Sanders twice, which forced the Buffs to punt from deep in their own territory.
