You can now edit or send text messages, send an emoji to Siri, and crop photos with the camera, but the most interesting additions are on the lock screen. With iOS 16, you can now customize the lock screen in several ways, including widgets. Read on to find out how you can do this.

WHAT ARE WIDGETS?

Widgets are icons on your iPhone that display information from an app at a glance without opening the app.

They were introduced by Apple in 2020 with iOS 14 and make it easy for you to view important information such as weather, calendar events and news headlines. For a couple of years, people have been able to add widgets to their home screen, which is the page you see when you turn on your phone.

There are many different customization options that allow you to choose the widget that suits you and change the color and size.

But this is the first time widgets are available on the lock screen, which means you can see some information without unlocking your phone.

HOW TO ADD WIDGETS TO YOUR LOCK SCREEN

First, you need to download iOS 16. Do this by going to Settings > General > Software Update > Download and Install. Then follow these steps to add the widget to your lock screen:

  • Light up your iPhone, but don’t unlock it.
  • Hold down on the screen.
  • Press Customise.
  • Tap Add Widgets.
  • Choose the Widget you want to add to your Lock Screen.
  • Press X and then Done.
If you're not happy with a widget, simply tap and hold a lock again and you can change or remove it. Depending on the sizes you choose, you can have up to four different widgets below the clock on your lock screen. However, you cannot move them or drag them across the screen. iOS 16 allows you to add widgets to the clock next to the date.

OTHER WAYS TO CUSTOMISE YOUR LOCK SCREEN

Widgets aren't the only way to customize your lock screen with iOS 16. There are many exciting additions! In the Customization section, you can change the font, color, layout and style, color and time and date font of the elements. You can change the color and font of your lock screen photos, and there's a gallery of ideas to choose from if you're not sure how to customize your screen.

There's also a new layered photo effect that dynamically displays photo subjects to make the subject pop.

Or, you can set a series of photos to switch on automatically. iOS 16 also intelligently suggests photos from your library that look good on your lock screen.
