Bank of America Outage Leaves Customers with Blank Account Balances

Access issues and missing balances cause concern for millions.

Bank of America customers are having a frustrating day on Wednesday, with many reporting that their account balances are temporarily unavailable. The dreaded message, "Accounts temporarily unavailable," has now become a reality for many users trying to access their funds.

A Week of Outages Hits Major Platforms

Now reports indicate that Bank of America has joined the list after disruptions involving Spotify, Verizon, and PlayStation. Users are instead seeing "$0" or "---" in place of their account balances starting Wednesday morning. The problem was reported first on Downdetector just before 1 PM ET. However, widespread complaints arose through all social platforms on X and Reddit. In addition, some users have said that while their balances are being omitted, amounts owing are appearing correctly. Bank of America has acknowledged the problem and, through their mobile app, is forcing users to stare at this screen: "Accounts temporarily unavailable." They have also said "some accounts and/or balances are temporarily unavailable," according to a CNN report. Other customers have been able to get some access back on an intermittent basis, but that leaves one still wondering about the scale of the problem or when, if ever, this problem will be fixed. According to reports from Bank of America as of July, 58 million clients are using the digital services available, and users have logged in with a record 23.4 billion times last year. As much as this is impressive, no information has been shared about the cause of the current outage or a timeline for fixing the problem.

Waiting for Updates Bank of America has not offered any explanation for its recent outage, and users are nervously holding on to hope that a fix could be coming soon. The Verge contacted the bank for a response, and we will update this article with more as we can gather. The case highlights the need for the availability of effective digital banking service to more than a million customers at Bank of America who could not access their accounts.
